Happy Birthday Sugar Bear! Today we celebrate you, your life and service and we ask our friends in honor of our hero’s life to register for the Virtual Sugar Bear Memorial Run. Your participation not only goes directly towards our programs for Gold Star spouses and children but also to those of the Marine Corps Association. We cannot think of a better way to celebrate Sugar Bear’s special day than by helping us support his beloved Marine Corps and the families who have given their all-in service to our great country.

Thank you for helping us continue Sugar Bear’s legacy of service, your support and participation in this year’s Virtual Memorial Run.

Employment Opportunities and Ongoing Support

To our Gold Star spouses we wanted to share an upcoming employment opportunity event as well as tax support that we believe you will find of good use. If you currently have employment needs, we encourage you to reach out to our Admin@theSugarbearfoundation.org as we are working with other organizations and providers to assist you with such endeavors. Additionally, if you are considering making some career changes, starting a new business, or thinking of returning to school, we would suggest checking out our Coaching and Resume Scholarships as we believe these two opportunities can help while pursuing such goals or during the exploration process.  Please also be on the lookout for a new page we will be launching this summer that will focus on topics such as career, transition, leadership, and finances. We know this type of support is not only needed in the days, weeks and months that follow the loss of a service member but in the years to come.  Stay tuned!

In honor of Sugar Bear’s birthday (May 25th) we will focus this month on not only celebrating his life but also sharing his story and highlighting our work.  We hope if you have not already you will check out our social media pages for such features (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter). This month is also incredibly special to me as we officially formed five years ago, and I am beyond grateful for all the support that we have gained along the way. We have so much going on with Sugar Bear as we work to provide more for the spouses and children we serve, and we could not do any of it without your help. Thank you!

As always, please reach out if you would like to get involved or help us by joining our Ambassador Program to help promote our Sugar Bear Virtual Memorial Run - July 22, 2021 and to help spread community awareness. We appreciate any help you can give.

Thank you,

The Season of Renewal

Easter is known as a season of renewal and rebirth, if you will, and our work with surviving spouses and children is no different. We are constantly looking to improve and add to the programs and opportunities we provide our families. From a personal standpoint I try to incorporate my experiences within the educational realm and as a parent to make sure we are assisting in a way that will provide unique programs that are needed within the Gold Star community… Programs that are at the heart of our mission and focus on career, educational and financial initiatives. As such, there is currently a lot going on behind the scenes of the Sugar Bear Foundation. Through support from our amazing scholarship sponsor, RF-LAMBDA, we are working on a new national STEM program for Gold Star children/teens and an educational support page. Additionally, a support page for Gold Star spouses by their fellow survivors and consultants that will address their interests, challenges, and even provide some sources of inspiration!

As an organization, it is important we not only refine our existing programs but are constantly evolving. This is important as we look for the best ways to serve our families and meet their ongoing needs. So, we have added our new Gold Star Registry Application. The Registry will serve as a means of providing direct communication and making sure our families know of new and ongoing opportunities that are tailored to their specific needs.

We are seeing success and a growing interest with many of our opportunities, such as the Coaching Scholarship, Tutoring, Resume and Financial Assistance Programs. Within this newsletter we featured some of our Coaching Scholarship recipients in honor of Gold Star Spouses Day. To say these women are amazing would be an understatement as they exhibit courage and resiliency in their life after loss. True heroes in their own rights and I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with them.

Through careful research, we knew our Financial Assistance Program was needed in our community and we spent the last few years directing our fundraising towards the goal of launching this program. We were not only correct in our assessment but since the program’s inception we have been able to help by making payments towards, rent, car repairs, utility, tax, credit card, and medical bills. We are happy to provide this assistance as a means of not only recognizing the sacrifices these families have made but to also help remove any burdens due to losing their heroes.   Our next goal is to add a similar program for Gold Star children, and we look forward to sharing soon.

None of our endeavors would be possible without the support we receive both through financial means and the volunteers that assist us through our Ambassador Program. I am personally grateful to these Marines and civilian friends who serve by sharing our mission and the Sugar Bear Memorial Virtual Run event information.  Mario constantly reminded me to count our blessings and to always look at the positive side of life. I am so blessed for these wonderful individuals who are truly helping us grow. It also does not hurt to have the absolute best team of consultants and Board Members. Yes, I am lucky!

As always, I welcome you to join our mission by reaching out with any ideas or assistance you may be able provide. If you haven’t already, we hope you will sign up for Sugar Bear’s Virtual Memorial Run as a means of supporting programs for Marines, Gold Star spouses and children. In doing so you help us honor Sugar Bear’s legacy of service in a truly impactful manner.

Thank you,

February and Love

February is known as the month of love, and we adore all that we are working on this month in support of our families. We will soon be launching a new page and program with our scholarship sponsor for Gold Star students. Both will provide academic support as well as virtual opportunities.  Additionally, we are preparing to launch a page solely for our spouses that will provide further insight and assistance geared towards supporting them in a variety of areas such as with their career endeavors and benefits. These opportunities are needed for our families as they find their new footing in life and plan for their future. A wonderful example is seen with our recent Coaching Scholarship Recipient, Erica Brophy. I hope you will read Erica’s story and how she is giving back to our community.

We are also, thrilled to share our new Ambassador Program in conjunction with Sugar Bear’s Virtual Memorial Run. This new program and event are especially important to me because both will help us grow our mission, impact our families, and support Marines and I know Sugar Bear would love that!  We hope you will reach out to Admin@thesugarbearfoundation.org if you would like to take part in the Ambassador Program or provide another means of support.

As always, I appreciate you taking the time to read about our work, the Gold Star community, and letting us share the life of our hero.

Thank you,
